Which fence lasts longest in Bakersfield heat?
Updated October 2026
Metal and good vinyl usually last longest here. Powder-coated aluminum and steel do not dry out or warp, and UV-stabilized vinyl in a light color resists fading and heat movement. Wood can last too, but only with regular sealing. It depends on product quality, color, how the fence is installed, and how much wind and sprinkler water it sees, not just the material name.
How does each material handle sun and heat?
| Material | Heat and UV | Dust | Cost per foot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum, powder-coated | Excellent; coating resists fading | Rinses off | About $20 to $60 |
| Steel, powder-coated | Excellent; gets hot to touch | Rinses off | About $30 to $85 |
| Vinyl, UV-stabilized, light color | Good; needs expansion room | Easiest to clean | About $25 to $55 |
| Wood, sealed | Fair; dries, checks, grays | Holds dust in grain | About $20 to $45 |
| Chain link, galvanized | Excellent | Unaffected | About $10 to $30 |
Why does wood struggle here?
Intense sun and very low humidity in summer draw moisture out of the boards. That leads to cracks, cupping and fasteners backing out. Cedar and redwood resist it better than pine, and a penetrating sealer renewed about once a year on sun-facing sides slows it down. Steel posts behind the boards remove the most common structural failure.
What should I look for in vinyl?
- UV-stabilized material, so it does not yellow or turn brittle.
- Lighter colors, which absorb less heat.
- Rail and post routing with room to expand.
- Metal stiffeners in posts on windy runs.
Is metal always the best choice?
For durability, it is hard to beat. The trade-offs are privacy, since most metal fencing is open, and surface temperature, since dark metal in direct sun can burn skin. Lighter powder-coat colors help.
Which one fits your yard?
Choose aluminum or steel if…
you want the longest life and do not need a solid privacy screen.
