Is chain link a good fit for Bakersfield?
For many properties, yes. Wind passes straight through the open mesh, so chain link rarely blows over. Heat does not affect it, and a galvanized or coated fence shrugs off dust. It is a practical choice for dog runs, side yards, back lots and businesses.
What options are there?
- Galvanized: the standard, lowest-cost option.
- Black or green vinyl-coated: blends into landscaping and looks cleaner from the street.
- Privacy slats: add screening, though slats also add wind load, so posts need to match.
- Heavier gauge and taller fabric: for commercial and industrial sites.
Can I add barbed wire at home?
No. Bakersfield's zoning code bars barbed and electrified wire along, or within 3 feet of, residential lot lines, and does not allow sharp wire or points on top of any fence under 6 feet. Commercial and industrial sites have their own rules; see commercial and industrial fencing.
How much is chain link?
As of October 2026, published ranges put installed chain link at roughly $10 to $30 per linear foot. Coated fabric, slats and heavier posts cost more.
